Call for Entry at Textile Museum, Washington D.C.

STORIES OF MIGRATION: CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS INTERPRET DIASPORA

A recent message from Leni Wiener, Chair of SAQA Exhibitin Committee, posted on the yahoo-group:

Since stepping into the Chair of the Exhibition Committee a year ago, I have been asking and listening to what our members want in an exhibition opportunity. There were lots of suggestions—more museum venues, large scale work, installation work, free standing or dimensional work, cutting edge work that stretches us as artists. 
  
That is why I am so excited to tell you about the newest call for entry. The Textile Museum in Washington DC has recently reopened in a fantastic new facility on the campus of the George Washington University and will host a SAQA exhibition there in 2016. This is an opportunity to exhibit work in a world class museum, to do large pieces (they have one section of the gallery space with thirty foot ceilings), and all kinds of cutting edge work that will show the world the innovative and amazing range of SAQA’s artists.

Please read the call for entry carefully, and remember this (actually remember this for all calls for entry): the theme is your inspiration, it is the door that opens to your imagination to interpret in any way you wish. Don’t be limited by only what is suggested, stretch yourself, be inspired and create work that relates to the theme, but doesn’t not need to be literal. I often hear that members want more themes that can be abstract—if you are inspired any theme can be abstract. I hear that people want themes related to their usual body of work—make the theme fit your usual style, technique and subject matter. This is a theme that is wide opened to interpretation. 

 We have posted the call for entry a year in advance so those who wish to make work specifically for this call have ample time to think about, plan and create pieces for submission. And because this is a single venue event, if you can ship it to the museum, you can enter it. None of these pieces will travel after this one venue, so there is no need for your work to be accommodated by the restraints of our usual shipping containers.

WIDE HORIZONS IV on the horizon!

It is time to start thinking about entering SAQA’s Europe and Middle East biennial showcase exhibition, Wide Horizons IV, which will premiere at the European Patchwork Meeting (Carrefour du Patchwork) in September 2014, and then very likely tour Europe for a year.

The theme ‘Wide Horizons’ is wide open – that’s the idea – you don’t have to think of just landscapes! You may consider making something new for this exhibition, but it is  perfectly possible to enter an existing quilt, provided it has not been shown at EPM / Carrefour before.  You can enter up to three works, but only one per entrant will be selected.

The entry method is online via the SAQA website, and it will be open during the month of May.  You can go now to www.saqa.com, Member’s section, log in, and look into the Calls for Entry.  You can get the full details there, a preview of the registration forms, and also click on links to lots of very useful information, such as how to resize photos.

There are maximum and minimum sizes for the quilts entered, and that seems to have caused some confusion – so here is a clarification of the sizing:

Your quilt can be any size between a minimum of 70 cm by 70 cm (i.e. EACH side has to be no smaller than 70 cm) and a maximum of 150 cm x 150 cm (i.e. each side has to be no bigger than 150 cm).  The quilt DOES NOT have to be square though!  You can make a quilt, say, 85 cm by 130 cm, or 106 cm by 75 cm, or 112 cm by 145 cm, or 87 cm by 95 cm, or whatever you choose.... as long as each one of its sides is not smaller than 70 cm and not bigger than 150 cm.  Shaped edges are possible; but please no very delicate finishes, and unfortunately we cannot accept 3D work.

The minimum and maximum sizes were decided because of likely travelling constraints - too big and it is difficult to transport, too small and it may be more difficult to hang.  We don't know yet how much this show will travel, but I believe there is already a second venue secured.  The previous exhibition, Wide Horizons III, travelled to 6 or 7 venues, most of them in Europe, but the last one was in Johannesburg, South Africa.

A catalogue has been talked about as a possibility, but there are time and budget constraints which may make it difficult to make it a reality for this exhibition.  It may have to wait until Wide Horizons V, in two years’ time….

Art Quilt Award 2013 - Extension of Deadline

We have already posted the call for entry for Art Quilt Award 2013. However, this piece of information needs to be added:

We are pleased that in recent weeks we have received many applications. The last days we have been asked whether it would be possible to enter applications even after August 15 for the Art Quilt Award 2013.

 To give more interested persons the opportunity to participate, we are pleased to inform you that we postponed thedeadline to September 8.The notice of acceptance of the quilts made by mail on September 12. Good luck to all of you!

Call for entry: TIME

The loss of time is therefore both more significant and more common than any other loss we may suffer”.

CALL FOR ENTRY

Time has always been a determining factor of life. The competition “Art Quilt Award 2013” is dedicated to this theme.

The exhibition will take place from October 12 to November 16, 2013 at the Handmade Festival in the Nordwolle Delmenhorst Museum, Am Turbinenhaus 10-12, Delmenhorst, Germany. The exhibition is further planned to travel to Handmade Bielenfeld 2014 and Handmade Brunswick 2014, and the art work will be returned towards the end of 2014.

The opening is planned for Friday, October 11, 2013.

This competition is organized by MIX MAX Event  and Project Agency e.k. Brunswick in collaboration with Nordwolle Delmenhorst Museum of Industry and the Quilters-Insel.

1^st prize: € 1000 for the purchase of a quilt for the art quilt collection of Delmenhorst Museum.

2^nd prize: € 500

The competition is open to all artists residing in Europe.
