Wide Horizons V - Safe Haven by Christa Ebert

Showing at Patchworktage in Germany in June

Safe Haven
The great number of refugees is the top theme in political and social discussions in our country. The quilt deals with this topic. The small gap in the border symbolizes the difficulties refugees have to overcome. Only few people manage to reach the safe haven.

Dyeing, painting, machine- and hand applique, hand stitching, free-motion applique

Mostly self dyed linen and mostly self dyed cotton, polyester-organza, fusing material

Wide Horizons V - Underground River by Maryte Collard

Showing at Patchworktage in Germany in June

Underground River

Underground rivers run  beneath the  surface of the Earth. We are not able to see them but we know they are there. Once in while they break out as crystal clear springs. In the same way we experience our emotions as well as  creativity. Unseen on the surface once in a while they break out and open new horizons for us and for others.

Machine piecing, domestic machine quilting, hand stitching.

My own rust and hand dyed cottons, one commercial batik, polyester batting, cotton yarn, variegated polyester thread

Wide Horizons V - Metropolis 6 by Jette Clover

Showing at Patchworktage in Germany in June

 Metropolis 6

I love living in the city and exploring the traces of past communication in the urban landscape. The torn, faded, peeling and overlapping posters, advertisements and graffiti present a visual documentation of time and place.

Painted, stamped, screen printed, flour paste printed, collage, hand- and machine stitched

Cotton, linen, cheese cloth

(this quilt was shown in the 'distortion' exhibition in Alsace)

Wide Horizons V - Generosity by Maria Billings

Showing at Patchworktage in Germany in June

Generosity

"Generosity" shows people around the globe sharing fruits and vegetables, as a sign of holding together during hard times.

Simplifying the complexity of the composition widened my horizon: combining many, many sketches of different hands (different skin colors, different ages) into one composition was a new challenge for me.

Hand-painted with acrylic, then hand-quilted (took 2 years)

Wide Horizons V - Tranquillity by Elly van Steenbeek

Showing at Patchworktage in Germany in June

Tranquillity

My inspiration for this work is a Haiku:

Away from it all
Deep breath in of salty air -
Sea tranquillity

The design is based on the sea, the sand and the sky.

The symbols are signs of tranquillity and peace.

Fusing, hand embroidery

All kinds of papers, rusted, altered and painted, combined on a base of cotton.
