SAQA UK Pod Meeting - response from Elizabeth Michellod-Dutheil
Dear Christine, thank you very much for this
report. The reflections that have been on the agenda reflect very well the
potential of the textile as Art but the difficulties to make recognize our
passion as such are evident especially in Europe. The gallery owners take no
risk in the world of Art and the textile is not recognized as an artistic
medium but is seen as craft. As long as this point of view or belief is not
eliminated, there is little chance of exhibiting in large spaces and few will
be offered to us. My best friendly greetings. Google translation
Chère Christine, merci beaucoup pour ce
compte-rendu.
Mes meilleures
salutations amicales

Abstract collage - what is buried
underneath the layers of earth, soil & land. People's memories, their
lives, their time on earth. This piece was dedicated to the extraordinary
finding of the bones of King Richard III (1442-1485) under a carpark, in Leicester,
England a few years ago. I like the idea of past lives coming to the surface
and showing us their history. Once discovered, there has to be a means of
finding the place again - hence the title - X Marks The Spot.
Techniques used
Hand stitched, self dyed &
painted. surface stitchery.

“Made in Europe” showcases 30 art quilts from makers in the
SAQA Europe and ME region. The quilts celebrate geographical features of the
region – the mountainsides in Italy, England’s “green and pleasant land”, birds
in Sweden and local flowers in abundance. Abstract works reflect wintery walks
on our shores and thought provoking designs depicted by text often in the
maker’s mother tongue command your attention.
These art quilts show the wide variety of design and
techniques used to make textile in Europe and the ME. Many of the works are
created using the makers own hand dyed fabrics, others are hand painted and
some incorporate digital images. There are whole cloth pieces, quilts which
have been neatly pieced and others where makers have applied a rougher more
patched look. Quilts are machine
stitched, hand stitched, fused and embellished with yarns and beads.

Statement
My poster is economical with both text and graphics, but is intended to convey a much more ‘wordy’ message. As it only uses 3 words the observer needs to fill the gaps in the narrative in order to make sense of what they see and at the very least engage with the message.
From a distance the statement is clear and bold; even a casual glance should get it noticed. With a more lingering look bottles in the grungy landfill at the base of the poster become more obvious – and the white linear marks of the upper background give the viewer something to puzzle over, keeping them looking and thinking all the while.
My aim is to remind people of the vast amount of unnecessary plastic material which is rapidly taking up space in landfill and filling our oceans and bring about a change in people’s behavior. The poster does not nag, lecture, threaten or rely on complicated graphics to deliver its message, instead illustrating a single positive action that can be easily fulfilled by anyone.
Techniques used
Sun printing, lino block printing, stencilling, raw edge applique, free motion quilting on a domestic machine and hand quilting.
Materials used
100% cotton fabric and wadding, acrylic paint, fiber reactive dye, soy milk, soluble stabilizer, cotton, rayon and metallic thread, embroidery floss and knitting yarn.

I found my own style
Maryte was born and raised in Lithuania where
she worked as a general practitioner until she moved to the Unites States in
2002. She had been occupied by all kinds of needlework like most women are in
Lithuania. It even involved some quilting, which was not a usual craft in
Lithuania at that time. However, it was in the United States where she got
acquainted with traditional patchwork and quilting. Maryte has even worked at a
quilt shop there!
MARYTE COLLARD
Website/blog:
Facebook:
SAQA
member since 2014
Our only member in Lithuania kindly agreed to share her story about her
participation in the SAQA Mentorship Programme.
Two worlds
Maryte returned to Lithuania in 2013 and her
quilting style transformed into art quilts. At that time, she also became a
member of SAQA because she liked the mission of this organization and there was
no local alternatives. In Lithuania she faced problems with finding supplies
she was used to in the United States. This challenge has made Maryte create
quilts with as little additional materials as possible. She uses piecing and
quilting techniques that do not require additional supporting materials.
Another characteristic of textile work in
Lithuania has been the greyish colours of the, often linen, fabric they produce
and use. Looking at the work of Maryte it is clear she has stepped away form
the grey linen tradition; her work features bright colors combined in well
coordinated combinations.
The SAQA Mentorship Program
In 2015 Maryte applied for the Mentorship
Program of SAQA. She had set two goals for herself – to build a website and
find her own style in quilting. Additionally, she hoped the latter will help
her receive the Juried Artists Member (JAM) status at SAQA.
Before applying for the Mentorship Programme
Maryte found her work ‘’chaotic’’. She was experimenting with a lot of
techniques that made every quilt of hers look different.
The Mentorship Programme linked
Maryte with the Australian artist Brenda Gael Smith who became her mentor.
Brenda was able to help Maryte with both the artistic aspects of Maryte’s work
as building a website. The Programme consisted of monthly, and often more
regular, Skype sessions and email exchange for 16 months. There were
assignments that Maryte had to carry out and the results were discussed with
different techniques. Brenda acted as a coach offering Maryte techniques for
assessing her own art. The artist’s website of Maryte was built by herself
using the technical and design support of Brenda.
Maryte admits that the mentoring programme has
been an eye opener for her. She is glad she has had this experience and
believes that without it her artistic work would not had grown as much as it
has. According to Maryte, it was the ‘’working in series’’ approach that
changed the way she is working on her quilts. She has now discovered a
technique that is inspired by the log
cabin and now she makes pieces in this technique depicting designs from
photos made by herself.
Maryte’s art has been featured in books,
magazines as well as selected for shows. She is confident that this success is
an outcome of the Mentorship Program of SAQA.
Two days after our interview Maryte let me know
her JAM application had been honored and she is now a SAQA JAM member.
CONGRATULATIONS!

"ZOOM" - If our
visual perception is changing ...
Our View is based on the recording and processing of visual stimuli, in recognition of elements and their interpretation by comparison with memory. The selection of relevant information and it's perception takes place through the functions of the eye and brain. During this process of allocation, perception happens: the object is placed in a specific known category. If the recognition of objects shifts through drastic changes such as enlargement, reduction, change of perspective, etc. It is no longer possible to assume what we see is representational, and imagination and fantasy takes over.
By this transformation and change, the association of the viewer has nothing to do with the object.
The participants are called to reflect the theme "Zoom - if our visual perception is changing ..." in their TEXTILE WORKS.
