Fenella Davies’s X marks the spot selected for SAQA’s Layered Voices, U.S.A.
Fenella Davies (UK)
Statement
Abstract collage - what is buried
underneath the layers of earth, soil & land. People's memories, their
lives, their time on earth. This piece was dedicated to the extraordinary
finding of the bones of King Richard III (1442-1485) under a carpark, in Leicester,
England a few years ago. I like the idea of past lives coming to the surface
and showing us their history. Once discovered, there has to be a means of
finding the place again - hence the title - X Marks The Spot.
Techniques used
Hand stitched, self dyed &
painted. surface stitchery.
Materials used
Cotton, linen, antique lace, Japanese
matting, hessian.
It's an amazing work!
